About ICSPM

ICSPM has been held under the sponsorship of The Japan Society of Applied Physics, and was originally a series of the domestic conferences on SPM organized in 1985 first to stimulate the SPM related science and technology which were growing in Japan. In 1993, the conference was reorganized as an international colloquium and has been held annually.

In 2000, ICSPM8 and Asian SPM 3 were held in conjunction to make a progressive development of this field. The Asian SPM is the conference organized to encourage interactions and exchange of participants from Asian and Pacific rim countries. In 2002, in order to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the colloquium, the ICSPM10 was successfully held in Hawaii. In 2005, ICSPM13 was held in conjunction with STM05 in Sapporo with more than 750 participants from 39 countries. Following ICSPM20 in Toyako (Hokkaido) in 2012, 20th anniversary of the colloquium was celebrated in Okinawa in 2012. In 2013, ICSPM21 was held in conjunction with ACSIN-12 in Tsukuba, with the participants of 667 including 224 from foreign countries. In 2018, ICSPM26 was held in Sendai in conjunction with ACSIN-14. From 2020-2021, ICSPM28 and ICSPM29 were held online due to COVID-19. In 2022, ICSPM30 wwas heald in Sapporo in conjunction with IVC-22. In 2024, ICSPM32 was held in Sapporo in conjunction with ISPM2024 and SPMonSPM2024.

Proceedings and special issues of the previous colloquiums can be found [here].

We are planning to invite several distinguished scientists to develop the potential of SPM works for the future. In addition, we have prepared several awards. You are cordially invited to participate in the conference. Active participation of young researchers, especially students, is strongly encouraged.

Sponsorship

Thin Film and Surface Physics Division of The Japan Society of Applied Physics (JSAP),

Co-sponsors

(including under negotiation) The Physical Society of Japan, The Chemical Society of Japan, The Japan Institute of Metals and Materials, The Surface Science Society of Japan, The Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers (IEICE), The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan, Catalysis Society of Japan, The Electrochemical Society of Japan, The Surface Finishing Society of Japan, The Japanese Society of Microscopy, The Society of Polymer Science, Japan, The Japan Society for Precision Engineering

Topics

The conference will cover recent advances in scanning probe techniques like STM, AFM and NSOM. Fields of interest are:

  • Instruments and methods
  • Macromolecules and polymers
  • Biological materials and cells
  • Semiconductors and metals
  • 1D or 2D materials
  • Single molecules and single atoms
  • Chemical and biochemical properties
  • Electrical properties
  • Magnetic and spin properties

Contributions to the scientific program regarding all aspects and application of these techniques are welcome.

Program

All oral presentations including invited talks will be held in a single session, and short presentations by exhibitors will also be held in the same hall. A poster session is scheduled on the first night. The banquet will be held on the second night. The classification of invited talks, oral presentations, and poster presentations will be determined based on the submitted abstracts and the number of submitted papers. The detailed program is available here.

JJAP Special Issue

We collect papers submitted to the colloquium and publish them as Special Issue "Scanning Probe Microscopy" articles in Japanese Journal of Applied Physics (JJAP), an IOP Journal. Special Issue articles and regular issue articles are published in the same issue. Special Issue articles are also accumulated in the table of contents (TOC) of Special Issue "Scanning Probe Microscopy" as is currently the case.

Poster Award

This Poster Award recognizes outstanding poster presentations at ICSPM33. Everyone 35 or younger as of Dec 11, 2025 is encouraged to apply as eligible. Application can be made after abstract submission on your account page.

The Poster Award winners will be offered following privileges:

  • The award ceremony will be held during the conference and the printed certificates will be distributed later.
  • They are granted the privileges to submit "Progress Reviews" to the JJAP SPM special issue and the publication fee will be waived.
